Atlantic ocean has constant swell. But when the wind turns from south (which is quite common lately, probably because of global warming etc. while mother Earth tries to fix itself...) and blows for a while do not wait for good. This is what you might get in Funchal marina. Even mooring line springs did not prevent it from happening...
